WHAT IS SELF STORAGE

The term "self storage" is short for "self-service storage" and is also known as "mini storage." Self storage facilities lease space to individuals, usually storing household goods, or to small businesses, usually storing excess inventory or archived records. The rented spaces are secured by the tenant's own lock and key. They all have different hours of operation. Some of these facilities also offer a 24 hour access.

Unlike in a warehouse, self storage facility employees do not have casual access to the contents of the space. A self storage operator does not take possession or control of the contents of the storage rental space, however generally unless the rent is paid the operator has the right to hold on to the goods until all rent for the unit is fully paid for.
